Overconfidence Costs Eagle

Eagle welcomed newly promoted St. Edward’s Old Boys to the nest this weekend, given the history between these two fairly local rivals it was billed as a must see game and it did not disappoint.
The game started with some excellent defensive displays on show by both sets of 15.
For the spectators it probably looked more like a game of tennis (or Padel as it’s known these days). End to end action was on show for the first 20 minutes, until an Almer sized gap appeared in the midfield. Not missing an opportunity to defy the laws of known physics, off he went, running at a speed close to Mach 1, stepping left and right as fast as his legs would carry him until he touched down for Eagles first score of the day and the season.
First blood Eagle 7-0.
The following 10 minutes played out much the same as the first 20.
Until some outstanding work by Wigans own Chris Bates, once again left the youthful St. Edward’s side looking bemused at the speed and agility of the Wigan Stallion, some cheeky offloads between Bates and Salvilla as they galloped up the pitch roared on by the capacity crowd at the Nest finished with Bates crossing the line.
Eagle 14-0.
Eagle with their tail feathers up and brimming with confidence began to let some over confidence seep in to their gameplay, trying to score from every carry & questioning a very stern referee at every turn.
We’ve been here before ladies and gentlemen, with the end of the first half in sight Eagle found themselves camped on their own try line, with what looked like a knock-on drew a cheer of relief from the home team and the crowd, closely followed by confusion as the referee had awarded a try... turns out 'headers' aren’t just for football.
A wayward pass had found the head of the St. Edward’s loose head prop and in to the in goal area, in true prop fashion the number 1 dove on the ball like it was the last steak bake in Greggs. A uniqure try, that you mightnever see in your lifetime!
14-7 Half Time.
Eagle still full of confidence started the second half as the first had ended, over confidence lead to frustration which then lead to errors. St. Eddie’s picking up on this started to use it to their advantage, crossing for some quick back-to-back try’s.
14-31.
Eagle once again found themselves on an unwanted camping trip on their own try line, tempers were high, 2 yellow cards in quick succession left Eagle down but not out. Knowing the game was out of reach but with a point to prove. Captain Jack Bainczyk crashed over the line from 10 meters out to finish the game on a high!
Final score 21-31 to St Edward's Old Boys.
Well done to St. Edward’s, and good luck for the rest of the season... let’s hope the tricksters make up for the loss with the return fixture in December.
